Art Students See van Gogh, Degas Works

Middle School students enjoyed their first art field trip of the year to the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Here, they were able to take a closer look at many masterpieces of painting and sculpture from different eras and genres of art. From Degas to Van Gogh to Augusta Savage and the contemporary works of Nigerian artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, the students reveled in the colorful imagery of portraits, landscapes, bronze sculptures and mixed media pieces. When asked what their favorite piece was, most students enthusiastically responded with "everything!" (Though Van Gogh's The Poplars at Saint-Remy was a close second). They all agreed that it was a very different experience to see the actual paintings in person, in comparison to images from a book or slide presentation in class. Thank you to the Norton Museum and the wonderful and informative docents, and our very helpful parent chaperones that joined us. Students all participated in engaging conversation about the Elements of Art and Principles of Design that they learned about in class. Please support the arts and visit the Norton. Palm Beach county residents receive FREE admission on Saturdays (with proof of residency).
