Paper Dragons

5th grade artists celebrated Chinese New Year by making paper dragon puppets based on the legend of Nian. Students used a glue resist to outline areas filled with colorful charcoal pastels. According to legend, the only things that kept the ferocious dragon Nian at bay was the color red and loud noises! That's just one reason that Chinese New Year traditionally is celebrated with firecrackers and red paper decorations.
