Who Will Stand Up For The Earth Week!

April 2, 2016

We are very excited to share with you some of the
activities that will be going on in two weeks during our “Who
 Will Stand Up For The
Earth?” Week, which
will be held from Monday, April 18, until
Saturday, April 23. This
week is a great opportunity for us to show-
case our school’s commitment to the environment, as well as demonstrate how we integrate
 that commitment as we
 educate the minds,
bodies and characters of
 our students. Many of
 you may have questions
about mindfulness, or
 making healthy eating
choices, or reducing our
impact on the environment. “Who Will Stand
Up For The Earth?”
 Week is an awesome
time for our students to share what they’re
 learning in class with
their families – not just
their core academics,
 but their whole education.

The week will start with Meatless Monday, a day to go veggie for all meals. In addition to the health benefits of a vegetarian diet, it is a good day to think about how human consumption of meat impacts the environment through the use of fossil fuels, land resources and water use. Meatless Monday actually goes all the way back to World War I!

On Tuesday, we will emphasize our commitment to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. Did you know that Bright Futures Academy has saved thousands of dollars and kept almost a ton (literally!) of materials out of our landfills through its Reuse, Reduce and Recycle Program?

Wednesday and Thursday focus on our use of resources, with Water Awareness Wednesday and Power Down Thursday. Many of us take it for granted that when we turn on the faucet, or flip the light switch, that the water and power will flow, safely and reliably. This isn’t the case around the world, and both water and energy are important resources that must be conserved in order to prevent scarcity both at home and abroad.

Earth Day 2016 is Friday, April 22. In addition to all of the educational environmental festivities on that day, we will also be hosting the Procession of the Species! Species diversification is vitally important for our ecosystems at every level. Students will be able to dress up as different species in a particular habitat depending on their grade.

Finally, on Saturday, April 23, we will host our EDU- Garden® Day! Make sure you keep tabs on EDU-Garden® News for the next couple of issues for more information from Ms. Pat about what we’ve got in store for you.
