As elementary students learned about the continent of Antarctica and discussed pictures and facts about the ice covered land, we were also learning about the elements of art texture and space. To start with, students drew a picture of an animal or animals found in Antarctica and the Antarctic sea. Students created a multi-media landscape which included a watercolor background. While the paint was still wet, the students sprinkled salt on their paper to create an interesting texture. We also created icebergs with different textures by doing crayon texture rubbings. Finally, as we discussed how artists create the illusion of space in flat paper. Students focused on organizing their icebergs and animals according to size in the foreground, middle ground, and background of their picture.
