Kindergarten and first graders learned about the continent of Antarctica focusing on the icy landscape and the penguins that live there. We learned how objects far away from us look smaller than objects close to us. We learned what a horizon line is and that it is far away - therefore as objects get closer to the horizon line, they appear smaller. In this way we learned how to create space in a flat picture. Students cut out and organized different sized ovals, from large in the foreground to small in the background towards the horizon line. They then turned their ovals into adorable antarctic penguins and completed the project with glitter stars in the night sky.
