Antarctic Scenes

February 17, 2017

In sixth grade we transformed our warm Florida classroom into a snowy retreat as we learned about the continent of Antarctica and created an abstract Antarctic landscape.  After discussing details of the continent, we discussed different watercolor techniques.  Students experimented with a total of seven different techniques including using bubbles, salt, crayon resist, tissue paper, rubbing alcohol, and even rice to achieve a variety of textures on different sections of their paper.  We used cool colors only to help indicate the frigidness of our subject.  Finally, students tore wavy, organic lines into their papers and overlapped the torn sections from the background to the foreground to give the impression of snowy mountains.  The results were great!
