Daruma Dolls

Seventh and Eighth graders made paper mache Daruma Dolls as we studied Japanese culture and art. We studied the history of the Daruma Doll and the legend behind the Buddhist Monk, Bodhiharma, who apparently sat in meditation for nine years without moving - thus the missing arms and legs on the Daruma Doll.  Daruma Dolls are a symbol of good luck and perseverance and are a common 'toy' in Japan.
